THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GRAVEL RACE IN AMERICA
Since Rebecca Rusch first launched RPI, it has become a bucket-list event for professional and amateur riders, alike. Rated a Top Five Gravel Event by Global Cycling Network and one of the 25 Best Bike Rides in the World by Outside Magazine, RPI has been staged every Labor Day weekend since 2013 in Rebecca's hometown and surrounding backcountry of Sun Valley and Ketchum, Idaho. It delivers it challenge in the middle of America's rugged, and ancient Rocky Mountains.

Day 4: Tater Tot

Satisfy your appetite with a side of Tater Tots! Coming in at just under 20 miles, the Tater Tot features the same professional experience as the Baked Potato and French Fry routes in a snack-sized format. Tater Tot riders will enjoy a 50/50 mix of terrain, sandwiching the nice, swoopy gravel and gentle climbs of the classic Corral Creek Road between a smooth pavement start and finish, the perfect introduction to gravel riding!

Day 3: Be Good Ride

What's it like?
This group ride is optional, but we strongly encourage you to join!
Ride starts at 8 AM in the Ernest Hemingway STEAM School Parking lot (adjacent to Atkinson Park), and ends around 10 AM at the same place. Join us for a meet & greet and ride with Rebecca Rusch; anyone is welcome to come for an easy ride out Trail Creek and Corral Creek Roads. We’ll ride the Tater Tot course, and you'll get your first up-close views of the Pioneer Mountains. This ride is half gravel and half pavement and the perfect way to recover, socialize, and enjoy the views. No timing here, just keeping our legs loose for Sunday's ride.

Day 1: Harriman Trail

What's it like?
This is Rebecca's favorite stage of the entire event, and arguably the most challenging. We begin across the highway from the Baker Creek overflow parking area, and competitors are encouraged to carpool to the start because of limited parking space.
There is one section of challenging single track that may require some of you to hike/hoof-it for a little bit before you're able to mount back up, but the payoff is well worth the effort as you rip back down from the top, north end of the course on the return route on what feels like a slalom run from the top to the bottom.

Day 2: Dollarhide

What's it like?
Start and finish at Limelight Hotel--8:30 AM sharp. There will be a neutral ride from Limelight Hotel to the beginning of Dollarhide Climb. You will have pavement for approximately five miles, then we hit gravel and ride along Warm Springs Creek. We will use this casual 20-mile ride as a way to connect, socialize, and warm up. Please do not drive out to the hill climb. The neutral sections are not timed, but are still considered part of the stage, so in order to be scored, you have to complete the whole stage, including the two neutral sections (out and back) and the hill climb.
Once you arrive at the base of Dollarhide, we will line up for the individual time trial climb in order of arrival from the casual ride starting at Limelight (remember you must complete the 20 mile casual ride from Limelight). This is a staggered start spaced 30 seconds apart. No drafting on the climb. No headphones.
Please note: there is a 20 MPH strict speed limit for the descent. Excessive speed will result in disqualification. After your time trial, you are welcome to stay and wait for other riders, or make your way back to town at your own pace. This segment is not timed, but is required. You must pedal back to Ketchum and complete the stage to be officially scored.
The finish of the stage is at Limelight Plaza. We will announce the day’s winners via website and social media at approximately 1 PM. Podiums for this stage will take place on Saturday at the Welcome Expo.

Day 4: French Fry

The Goldilocks course: not too short, not too long, but juuust right for those seeking jaw-dropping views and remoteness. You’ll still earn the bragging rights of the burly Trail Creek Summit climb and cover much of the same terrain (yep, washboards and headwinds, too) as your Baked Potato brothers and sisters without the full commitment.

Day 4: Baked Potato

The Baked Potato includes the challenging Trail Creek Summit climb before descending into the Big Lost River Basin. Riders loop through Wildhorse Canyon and Copper Basin, surrounded by scenic mountain ranges. Most participants then tackle 'El Diablito,' a five-mile diversion, before descending Trail Creek Summit back to Sun Valley. Riders must complete the course within cutoff times to be scored for the Queen's Stage Race.

Getting Here
For those new to the area, “Sun Valley'' is our shorthand for the collective towns of the Wood River Valley. It's also the name of the first destination ski resort ever built in the United States, and Ernest Hemingway’s home for many years. The towns you’ll spend most time in are Ketchum (where RPI begins and ends) and Hailey, 11 miles to the south (where the airport sits). The Big Wood River runs through both. The area is also the ancestral home of the Shoshone-Bannock people.
Flying In
The entire Sun Valley area is serviced by both air and ground transport. Hailey's airport (SUN) has flights from Salt Lake City, Seattle, San Francisco, and Los Angeles via SkyWest and Alaska Airlines. Should you need more flights from which to choose, Boise International (BOI) is a 2.5-hour drive to Ketchum with shuttle or rental car options. SunValley.com and VisitSunValley.com have trip planning pages to help you fill in the blanks and flush out your options.

As for the mint-on-the-pillow side of things, we reached out to our local hostelries to see if they wouldn’t sweeten the pot for our honored RPI guests. We’ve got some discounts listed below. Don’t wait too long, though. Ketchum is still a small town, and we’ve got a limited amount of beds, especially with Wagon Days Parade happening the same weekend. This is not some yokel event; it’s the biggest non-motorized parade in the country, and people come from all over just to take it in. On top of that, there’s a clean 1,100 miles of single-track in the area, some of it in spitting distance of downtown.
